The Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Rev. Dr Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, is leading the Ugandan delegation to the GAFCON G26 Conference in Abuja, Nigeria.

The Uganda team includes 41 Bishops, six clergy, and five laity.

The three-day conference, held from March 3 to 6, hosted by the Church of Nigeria, focuses on "choosing to serve" with a commitment to Biblical authority and discussing the future of the Anglican Communion, often referred to as a "reset" or "reordering" of the communion.

The gathering is focused on responding to theological divisions within the Anglican Communion and considering a "reordered" or "reset" communion.

On Thursday (March 5), the leaders at the conference are expected to elect a new leader for the reordering of the Anglican Communion.

GAFCON (Global Anglican Future Conference) is a movement of conservative Anglican churches and leaders formed in 2008 to uphold orthodox biblical doctrine and mission. It acts as a "confessing" fellowship, largely in response to theological divides within the Anglican Communion regarding sexuality and biblical authority.

GAFCON is often seen as a response to liberalising trends in Western Anglican provinces.

The Abuja meeting has attracted about 487 delegates from 34 countries, representing 182 dioceses, 24 provinces, and four new provinces-in-formation. These include 400 bishops and key leaders from across Africa, the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Australasia.

About GAFCON

Significance: It represents a major shift in the Anglican Communion, often considered a "reordering" or, as of 2025, a formal schism by some.

Leadership: Led by a Council of Primates and supported by a global network.

Foundation: Based on the 2008 Jerusalem Declaration and subsequent commitments.
