Tragedy struck Kamurojo-Moru village in Kyere sub-county, Serere district, after a five-year-old boy, Isaac Ecodu, died on April 12, 2025, after allegedly drinking a suspected poisoned soda.
According to family accounts, Ecodu had been given the drink by his father, Calvin Ebinu, who had reportedly purchased two bottles of soda from a nearby trading centre the previous evening.
Ebinu, 28, said he returned home to find the children asleep at their grandfather’s house and decided to give them the soda the following morning before leaving to seek further medical treatment.
Shortly after, Ecodu passed away, while his two brothers, who also drank the soda, were rushed to a nearby medical facility in critical condition.
The incident comes just days after a similar case in Kangodo, also in Kyere sub-county, where a seven-year-old girl, Becky Amoding, died in similar circumstances involving an alleged poisoned soda.
Speaking to Etop Radio, a CID officer with the district, who declined to be named, confirmed that investigations are ongoing, although details remained scant at the time of the report.
Authorities have since arrested the father for questioning as investigations into the source and cause of the poisoning continue.
