A team from the agriculture ministry has started a vaccination campaign against rabies in dogs and cats in Ntungamo district in preparation for the World Veterinary Day.

Agriculture state minister Bright Rwamirama revealed Wednesday that a team from the ministry has dispatched 50,000 doses of the FMD (foot and mouth disease) vaccine to the district.

“Our teams have kicked off with dispatch of vaccines at the DVO's (district veterinary officer) office in Ntungamo district. As we prepare for the World Veterinary Day, set for Friday, we started with vaccination of dogs and cats against rabies,” he said.

Rwamirama noted that the ministry is working together with the National Drug Authority (NDA) and the Uganda Veterinary Association (UVA) in the campaign.

He said they are targeting high-risk sub-counties in the western Ugandan district.

World Veterinary Day is celebrated every year on April 30. This year, the day will be commemorated in recognition of the efforts of veterinarians, veterinary associations, and others to strengthen veterinary resilience.
