President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has said that the unity of African unity should focus on guaranteeing the prosperity and strategic security of Africa.

He pointed out that the individual African states have small internal markets, which cannot drive them towards higher levels of prosperity.

“Africa’s future lies in unity and not isolation. As a Pan-Africanist, I take the issue of Africa’s unity as a must. It is our only source of survival,”  President Museveni said in a speech read for him by the Minister of Defence and Veteran Affairs Jacob Marksons Oboth-Oboth, during the Africa Day celebrations at Kololo Independence Grounds.

This year’s celebrations are under the theme, “Educate an African Fit for the 21st Century: Building Resilient Education Systems for Increased Access to Inclusive, Lifelong, Quality, and Relevant Learning in Africa.”

President Museveni implored all Pan-Africanists to work towards Africa’s political and economic integration to achieve liberation and freedom.

He observed that young people on the African continent need to start having a serious exchange of ideas concerning the future of Africa.

The Dean of African Ambassadors in Uganda, South Africa’s High Commissioner, Her Excellency Ms. Lulama Xingwana, stated that African Day offers an opportunity to celebrate the continent’s social and economic achievements and address the current education challenges.

Africa Day celebrates the establishment of the Organisation of African Unity, now known as the African Union, on May 25, 1963. Originally called African Freedom Day and later African Liberation Day, it originates from the United African opposition to colonialism and economic exploitation.

The celebrations were graced by: Ambassadors and High Commissioners of African States in Uganda, Cuba, and Venezuela, among others
