African Games: First Lady Janet Museveni congratulates Team Uganda

Uganda scooped 20 medals at the event with four gold, six silver, and 10 bronze medals together eclipsing the 2019 tally of 10 from the Rabat edition.

First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Museveni congratulated Team Uganda upon their achievement at the just concluded 13th edition of the African Games.

Uganda scooped 20 medals at the event with four gold, six silver, and 10 bronze medals together eclipsing the 2019 tally of 10 from the Rabat edition.

“I wish to congratulate Team Uganda for their performance in the AfricanGames2023, where they secured 20 medals across various competitions,” Museveni said on Tuesday afternoon upon the return of the team from Accra, Ghana where the games were held. 

“I commend the team and their coaches for proudly representing their nation! May the Almighty continue to bless your efforts and given talents.”

Uganda fielded approximately 153 athletes in 17 sports disciplines at the games and finished 13th overall.

Rugby Cranes 7s, Lady Rugby Cranes 7s, Gladys Mbabazi and Husinah Kobugabe in the women's badminton doubles, and Charles Kagimu in cycling won gold.

Kobugabe won silver in the badminton women's singles, weightlifter Davis Niyoyita won two silvers in the clear jerk and snatch categories, and men’s U20 football team, Peruth Chemutai in the 3000 steeplechase women and Halimah Nakaayi in the 800m women all clinched silver.

Josephine Lalam in javelin throw, Fadilah Shamikah in badminton women's singles, Kasim Murungi, Innocent Tumusiime, Muzamir Ssemuddu in boxing, Gloria Muzito in swimming at the 100m freestyle, Cricket Cranes, women U20 football team (Queen Cranes), Niyoyita in weightlifting, and basketball 3*3 men’s team all clinched a bronze medal totaling to 10.

She also congratulated the hosts of the event for staging a successful edition.

“My congratulations also go to President Nana Akufo Addo of Ghana for successfully hosting the tournament in Accra, as Egypt prepares to host the next edition in 2027,” she said.

“I encourage our athletes to aim for an even better medal haul at the various coming sports events.”

Uganda is now preparing to field athletes for the Paris Olympics in France.
