Pupils of Mother Tereza preparatory school in Adjumani district have set off to represent Uganda at the 2nd edition of the Twende Zetu Butiama pilgrimage, which will take place in Tanzania between 26 and 30 September 2025.
The event brings together learners and Young leaders across the East African Community (EAC) to celebrate unity, heritage and regional integration.
Organised by Afrika Mashariki Fest (AMF), the Twende Zetu Butiama Pilgrimage Safari commemorates both the late Nyerere’s enduring legacy and 25 years of the revived East African Community (EAC).
Cosmas Angua, the school head teacher, said that the selection of Mother Tereza Preparatory School marks a significant milestone not only for the institution, but also for the country.
"This is journey into the legacy of African leadership and unity, our 25 learners are honoured to walk in the footsteps of Julius Nyerere and represent Uganda," he said.
James Asiku, the director of Mother Tereza Preparatory School, revealed that their participation followed communication from Col. Fred Mwesigye, the Ugandan High Commissioner to Tanzania, who invited the school to the pilgrimage.
While flagging off, the assistant RDC Adjumani Obumai Simon Peter emphasised discipline among the learners as they embark on the journey.
"So as we leave today, let's ensure discipline and respect, listen to the teachers, and also have confidence as you represent the country to have more and bigger opportunities," Obumai emphasised.
