The Paramount Chief of Acholi, Rwot David Onen Acana II, has urged Acholi leaders to use the newly established Acholi Tradition Forum (ATF) to restore the region’s cultural heritage.

Speaking on February 21, 2025, Rwot Acana highlighted the ATF’s role in strengthening Acholi traditions and improving the well-being of its people.

"This is a significant historical gesture, reminiscent of our past traditions. It should serve as a reminder, teaching us to care for one another and foster development," he stated.

He called on the ATF leadership to embrace a shared vision that promotes unity and development rather than division.

Rwot Acana expressed concern over the erosion of Acholi cultural norms, attributing it in part to the impact of the LRA insurgency.

"Today's Acholi people have little respect for elders and one another, often abusing each other. This undermines our cultural heritage, and we must condemn such acts," he warned.

He urged the Acholi people to shift from lamenting their losses to actively restoring their cultural legacy through the ATF.

Ambassador Dr Olara Otunu commended Rwot Acana’s initiative, stating that Acholi anointed chiefs are the custodians of cultural values and should work to unify the institution.

In an earlier interview in Madi Opei, Kitgum district, Chief Justice Alphonse Owiny-Dollo advised Acholi leaders to set aside power struggles and uphold mutual respect.

"If sought, we leaders would offer our opinion on how to live and work together, and forgive one another where necessary," Owiny-Dollo said.

He added that the most pressing need for Acholi now is to collaborate with the government and support development efforts to combat poverty.
