#AALCO63 After five days of engagements, the 63rd Annual Session of the Asian-African Legal Consultative Organisation (AALCO) ended in Kampala on Friday (September 12), with the organisation's new president, Ugandan Kiryowa Kiwanuka, urging member states to "carry forward the resolutions adopted here" and not let them "remain words on paper, but become instruments of action".Over the course of the week-long session held at Speke Resort Munyonyo in Uganda's capital, delegates discussed topics such as the law of the sea, environmental sustainability, asset recovery, and the evolving frameworks of international trade and investment and outer space.
Kiwanuka, who is Uganda's attorney general, said the annual AALCO gathering, which Uganda has now hosted twice (in 2025 and in 1993), "continues to serve as a vital platform for fostering dialogue and co-operation among Asian and African states on matters of international law".
In his closing statement as president of the 49-member organisation of Asian and African states, Kiwanuka said: "We have not just engaged in deliberations, but witnessed the reaffirmation of solidarity, equality, and the rule of law which bind our continents together."
Adding: "The emphasis placed by several delegations on the need for equitable access to maritime and outer space resources resonates deeply with all member states, given that sea and outer space is a common heritage of mankind."
