Tributes have been paid to Kalangala District Woman MP Helen Nakimuli, who died at a health facility in Kampala on April 19, 2026, while undergoing surgery.

Nakimuli, who died aged 41 at Alexandra Medical Centre, was a first-time MP on the National Unity Platform (NUP) party ticket.

She was re-elected in the January 15 general election, and her last submission on the floor of Parliament was on April 15, 2026, during the debate on Uganda’s readiness to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

The immediate former Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Mathias Mpuuga, said the news of her death was not only shocking but devastating.

He said the deceased MP was “young, energetic, and hardworking, with a zeal and determination to better the lives of the people of the Ssese Islands”.

“Those of us who followed her during the time she served as a Community Development Officer in Bukebe, Bufumira, and Mazinga sub-counties of Kalangala saw a promising leader,” the outgoing Nyendo-Mukungwe MP and The Democratic Alliance party president said in a statement on X.

Mpuuga recalled that when Nakimuli started nursing ambitions of joining politics at the national level, they encouraged and supported her to join Parliament in 2021.

“She served in my cabinet as the Shadow Minister for Fisheries and was very outspoken on issues concerning fishing communities and safety on the lakes. She was peaceful and never acrimonious or vengeful.”

He thanked the Almighty God for her life and the many talents she shared as a leader and a sportswoman.

“Deep commiserations to the family of Rev. Fr Christopher Walusimbi, her father; the Orthodox faith that she professed; and the people of Ssese whom she served as MP,” he added.

Speaker of Parliament Anita Among said in a post on X that Nakimuli, who was also a sportswoman, was an “esteemed colleague”.

“Words are insufficient to convey the shock we are experiencing at this moment, and we pray that the Lord Almighty sustains her family, friends, and all of us during this challenging time,” Among, who is also the Bukedea Woman MP, said.

Her deputy, Thomas Tayebwa, who is also the Ruhinda North MP, said nothing hits the August House harder than losing a colleague.

“We shall greatly miss you my dear sister @nakimuli_helen. My condolences to your family, the Rt. Hon. Speaker @AnitahAmong, The Leader of Opposition in Parliament @JoelSsenyonyi and Honorable colleagues @Parliament_Ug, people of Kalangala district, National Unity Platform and the country at large,” he wrote on X.

The Minister of State in the Office of the Vice President, Diana Mutasingwa, also took to X and said the deceased MP had “a very beautiful heart”.

“This is unbelievable. She was so promising, omg. May her soul rest in peace; our beautiful Hon with a very beautiful heart,” the minister, who is also the Buikwe Woman MP, posted.

NUP president Robert Kyagulanyi described the news of Nakimuli’s death as terrible and shocking.
