A group of 24 pilgrims from Ochero Catholic Parish in Kaberamaido district has embarked on a spiritual journey on foot to Namugongo Martyrs' Catholic Shrine in Wakiso district.

The group, led by 66-year-old retired army officer Matthew Akwenyu, who served in the armed forces for 43 years, is currently resting in Ngora district as they continue their sacred journey.

Among the pilgrims are an 81-year-old woman, a 26-year-old woman, and a 17-year-old youth, all united by their resolve to complete the lengthy trek. Their number rose to 25 after they were joined by a fellow believer from Nyero Catholic Parish in Kumi district upon reaching St. Joseph Catholic Parish in Ngora.

According to Akwenyu, the group plans to arrive at Namugongo Catholic Shrine on May 24, in time to participate in nine days of novena prayers ahead of the Martyrs’ Day celebrations.

June 3 is a significant date on Uganda’s religious calendar, marking Martyrs’ Day — a national celebration in honour of the Ugandan Martyrs. These Christians were persecuted and killed in the late 19th century for their unwavering faith.

The annual event draws thousands of pilgrims from across Uganda and beyond, all converging at Namugongo for special masses and commemorations. It is a time for reflection on faith, values, and the inspiration drawn from the courage and devotion of the martyrs.
