Fourteen suspects arrested in connection with a spate of co-ordinated robberies targeting the public during President Yoweri Museveni’s nomination event are July 1, 2025, expected to be arraigned before the Chief Magistrate’s Court at the Law Development Centre (LDC), Police have said.

Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said the suspects are currently detained at Wandegeya Police Station.

“The 14 suspects detained at Wandegeya Police Station on allegations of attacking and robbing members of the public on June 28, 2025, will be arraigned this morning (Tuesday, July 1, 2025) before the Chief Magistrate’s Court at LDC,” Owoyesigyire said.

He extended an invitation to journalists to cover the court proceedings, adding that a separate group of suspects remains under police investigation.

16 suspects being processed

“Meanwhile, the Central Police Station Kampala is still processing the 16 suspects currently in their custody,” he added. Police announced on Monday, June 30 2025, that the number of suspects totalled 30.

The update comes a day after the Police clarified on the wave of speculation surrounding the attacks. On Sunday, June 29, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango confirmed that a total of 21 suspects, including two women, had been arrested following a series of violent robberies that took place on Saturday, June 28, 2025.

According to Onyango, the suspects camouflaged themselves in yellow National Resistance Movement (NRM) T-shirts to blend in with the crowds that had gathered to witness President Museveni’s nomination.

“The suspects disguised themselves in yellow T-shirts to blend in with NRM supporters and carried out violent attacks on pedestrians, motorists, and bodaboda riders,” Onyango said.

He revealed that the Police tracked the gang using the city’s Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) network and apprehended them from multiple hideouts in Kampala. One suspect sustained injuries while attempting to flee arrest.

“Our teams are reviewing more CCTV footage to identify additional culprits. We urge victims who have not reported to come forward so we can build a stronger case,” Onyango said.

The suspects are expected to face charges of simple robbery and assault, while Police investigations continue.
