The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, has said the current House will be known by its works and good deeds for humanity.

“Let us maintain that spirit, always,” she implored MPs at the beginning of the plenary session on Tuesday, January 9.

Among, who is also the Bukedea Woman MP, said it has been “a busy start” to the year 2024 with the just concluded 27th Conference of Speakers and Presiding Officers of the Commonwealth (CSPOC), which she said was “hugely successful”.

The three-day CSPOC started on January 3, 2023 at Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort Hotel in Kampala.

“Many of you, in your various sub-committees, had to work through the festive season to ensure the success of the conference. And on that note, I take this opportunity to congratulate and thank you for a successful conference. Thank you very much and keep up that remarkable spirit of sacrifice, teamwork, and dedication,” she told the House.

She also thanked the Clerk to Parliament and his staff for effectively playing their role. “An organization is only as good as its human resource. I commend the Parliamentary Service for being a model service driven by professionalism and excellence.”

Among also extended her “hearty thanks” to President Yoweri Museveni for his consistent support to the legislature, including the success of the conference.

“At the end of the day, a collaborative working relationship between the three arms of Government is more productive and useful.  I am also aware that sectoral committees have been working throughout the festive season, processing the national budget framework paper. I commend you all for your dedication,” the Speaker said.

CSPOC was created in 1969 as an initiative of the then Speaker of the House of Commons of Canada, Lucien Lamoureux, and its membership is restricted to the Speakers and Presiding Officers of national parliaments of all independent sovereign states of the Commonwealth. It consists of 22 bicameral parliaments and 30 unicameral parliaments.
