As Ugandans made merry during the Christmas festive holiday, the Uganda Prisons Services (UPS) was on a hunt for some prison escapees.

The UPS spokesperson Frank Baine told reporters at the weekly security joint briefing on Monday (January 04) at the police headquarters that, throughout the operation, 11 escapees were recaptured from various areas.

"We managed to fish back to our custody 11 of them," he said.

Baine said they have so far recaptured 134 prisoners out of the 224 escapees from Moroto Prison in September 2020. They also managed to recover nine guns out of the 14 which were taken.

“The major breakthrough is that we also recaptured the mastermind of the escape,” he added.

A total of 73,836 prisoners are incarcerated around the country, says UPS. They include 18,842 (capital offenders) and 19,426 (petty offenders).

Meanwhile, Baine said all prisoners got a special treat during Christmas.
