KAGADI - Police say their territorial Police in Kagadi district have responded to a tragic incident in which a canoe carrying over 30 passengers capsized on River Nguse at Kyaleni village, Pachwa town council.
The Police's April 29, 2026, revelations indicate that the calamity happened a day earlier at about 8:30pm.
Albertine region Police spokesperson Julius Hakiza said Police responded immediately.
“One survivor has been identified as Tumuhaise Byaruhanga (27), a resident of Kyaleni. The exact number of missing persons is yet to be confirmed due to lack of a passenger manifest,” he said.
Hakiza noted that the marine Police are on the ground conducting search and rescue operations, while an inquiry into the cause of the accident is ongoing. Possible factors include overloading, night travel, and the condition of the vessel.
“We urge relatives of anyone who may have been on the canoe to report to Kagadi Central Police Station. Further updates will be provided,” he added.
However, reports reaching New Vision Online indicate at least 10 people have been rescued and 20 are still missing. We could not independently verify these claims.
