“I am the most hated artiste in Uganda simply because I have a beautiful woman by my side.” Bebe Cool was 24, and Zuena was 16 when their love story began. “We were young, we are adventurous. I was in love, deeply in love with the most beautiful girl in the land then. Many men, young and old, wanted Zuena, but I got her and that made me a hated man.”
In 2003, two years after they met, the couple had a civil wedding. The same year, they had their first child, Alfa.

While sharing their love journey at the Bride and Groom Expo, at the Uganda Manufacturers Association multi-purpose hall in Kampala on Sunday, June 29, Bebe Cool was grateful to Zuena’s parents for allowing him to marry their daughter.
“When I met Zuena, I was young and not as good-looking as I am now,” he says. “I had spiked dreadlocks and looked very informal. My appearance was not very popular. I looked more like a lumpen, yet I was still struggling as an artiste,” Bebe Cool says.

Despite that, Bebe Cool knew what he wanted and the kind of girl he wanted to spend his entire life with. Zuena was that girl.
“I first met her in 2001 at the Miss Uganda Beauty Pageant as a contestant,” he says. “I immediately fell in love with her because she was very beautiful.”

Unfortunately, when Bebe Cool requested her contact, she declined. When Bebe Cool persisted on another occasion, she instead chose to take his contact and called him after some time. Upon hearing her voice on the phone, Bebe was shocked yet excited.
“I could not believe it,” he said, “I jumped out of the bathroom, abandoned the show I was meant to perform at in Mbale and ran back to Kampala.”

Bebe Cool says Zuena then promised to meet him after a week and after that first date, they were inseparable.
Zuena’s education journey
I dropped out of school in my senior three when I got pregnant with my first child. I then decided with Bebe Cool to have all our children, then after return to school. I have six children. I am currently pursuing a degree course at Makerere University. I am also an entrepreneur and owner of Zuena Cakes.

Why Zuena chose Bebe Cool
“I realised that he was genuine and had good plans for our lives on the contrary to other men who simply wanted to have temporary relationship with me,” Zuena intimates.
Bebe is also grateful to Zuena’s parents for giving him a chance in spite of his looks and income. Sadly, today, Bebe Cool says he would never give a chance to a young man looking like him to marry his daughter.

“Today’s generation is different from ours,” he says, “The young man has to look the part to take my daughter.”
How Zuena keeps the fire burning
“I dress sexily for my man while at home because I know that when he goes out to perform, his eyes will see many other good-looking and well-shaped women. I ensure I keep myself in shape and always attractive for him.”

Bebe Cool’s life nuggets
Wives should always keep in shape and endeavour to look attractive for their husbands. Husbands, too, should work out to avoid a potbelly.
Build your life together as a couple. Zuena and I started out in a rented single room. Our rent was sh30,000 then. I was a struggling artiste with nothing much, but Zuena stayed with me.
