An aching tooth is more than discomfort; it is the body sounding an alarm after months or even years of neglect.
According to dental experts, many people only seek help when the pain becomes unbearable, yet toothaches usually start long before the first sharp sting.
According to Dr Ashar Cheptoris, a dental surgeon at Sinai Dental Clinic, understanding the cause of tooth pain and adopting proper oral hygiene can prevent serious dental damage and costly treatment.
She explains that a toothache often signals a problem that has quietly progressed.
“An aching tooth indicates that a dental problem has been neglected for a long time. Cavities begin by attacking the enamel, then move into the dentine. When they finally reach the pulp cavity, the home of the tooth’s nerves, you experience severe pain,” she says.
She adds that once infection reaches the pulp cavity, the tooth becomes extremely sensitive, and the patient may require advanced treatment such as root canal therapy or extraction.
Moses Senabulya, a dentist at San Medical Centre, emphasises that prevention is far better than cure.
“It is important to keep your teeth healthy because most dental problems are avoidable. Consistent oral hygiene protects the enamel, stops bacteria from spreading, and reduces the likelihood of developing painful cavities”, he says.
He encourages people to pay attention to early signs such as mild sensitivity, gum irritation, or occasional discomfort, as these often precede serious toothaches.
To maintain strong, healthy teeth, dentists recommend simple but essential daily habits. These include brushing after every meal, brushing at night, and using a well-shaped toothbrush with firm bristles.
A fresh-breath pack can help maintain executive oral hygiene. Senabulya adds that dental floss is crucial for cleaning areas a toothbrush cannot reach.
Experts also warn against overeating sugary foods and acidic drinks, which speed up decay and erosion. Eating foods rich in calcium, such as milk and other dairy products, can strengthen tooth structure. Regular polishing and cleaning at least once a year are also highly advised.
Visiting a dentist early ensures better care, especially if you have sensitive teeth. And always remember to change your toothbrush every two months to maintain effective cleaning.
