What is anaemia?

Anaemia affects almost two billion people worldwide, with iron deficiency anaemia being the commonest cause. Iron is a critical component for making blood. The World Health Organisation (WHO) reports the proportion of women in their reproductive age with anaemia in sub-Saharan Africa is between 50-60%.
