Question: Dear Doctor, My first baby is eight months old and I am now two months pregnant. Should I continue breastfeeding the baby? At what point should I wean him from the breast?
Ronnet
Answer: Dear Ronnet, Congratulations on your pregnancy and motherhood journey.
You can safely continue breastfeeding while pregnant, especially in the early months, as long as you are healthy, eating well, and your pregnancy is not high-risk.
Many women breastfeed through pregnancy without issues. You should eat a nutrient-rich, high-protein and high-calorie diet. Additionally, drink plenty of water.
You may also need to consider a prenatal vitamin with iron and folic acid. You can continue breastfeeding until at least 12 months.
However, you should begin gradual weaning if you feel tired or weak, when the milk supply drops, and your toddler begins eating solids well.
Should you experience signs such as uterine cramps/contractions during breastfeeding, bleeding/spotting or dizziness/fainting, stop breastfeeding and consult your doctor or midwife for medical advice.
