Security agencies on Thursday, February 15, warned leaders in Amudat district, in Karamoja sub-region against civil disorder following reports that they are fueling ethnic hatred.

Earlier this week, a group of leaders are said to have drafted a document urging the district leadership to evict all Sabiny residing or working in the district.

Carved out of Nakapiripirit District in 2010, Amudat's main ethnic group are the Pokot, a group that shares a common culture and customs with the Pokot and Kalenjin of Kenya.

Warning of possible mayhem if the district leadership listens to the anti-Sabiny calls, Mike Longole the Mt. Moroto and Anti-Stock Theft Unit Spokesperson confirmed that security agencies had received information about the document which he said contains sectarian undertones circulating on social media deepening the rift of division between the Sabiny and the Pokot.

“ This sectarian information undermines the supreme law of the Republic of Uganda and it is our wish that people (Pokot and Sabiny communities) stay in harmony as Ugandans.

“And as joint security forces, it is our role to keep law and order and to uphold the constitution of the Republic of Uganda and ensure that the resolution passed by the leadership of Amudat District does not cause bloodshed between the two communities,” Longole added.

He said if nothing is done by the said leadership to bring unity to the two communities, security will remain with no option but to arrest and prosecute leaders who are involved in inciting violence between the two communities.

“We are preparing our security teams to avert the danger,” he noted.

Efforts to get a comment from Geoffrey Akol, the Amudat Resident District Commissioner on Friday proved futile.

In his mandate, the RDC heads the security committee of the district.

Both security and local sources in Amudat have confirmed that tension is high between Pokot and Sabiny communities over grazing lands.

Apart from counter-accusations about cattle theft between the Pokot and Sabiny, the district has also recorded human fatalities linked to sectarianism.

The latest victim identified as Joseph Lokipurat from the Lokales village in Amudat was killed last month as he was grazing his cattle near the border of Kween District.

Amudat District is bordered by Moroto District to the north, the Republic of Kenya to the east, Bukwo District and Kween District to the south and Nakapiripirit District to the west.
