KAMPALA - Parliament has directed the Ministry of Agriculture to send urgently a team to Kiruhura district particularly Nyabushozi Constituency which is said to be battling the problem of Tsetse Fly infestation.

Chaired by Speaker Anita Among, the House said the team should access the extent of damage and report back next week with solutions.

This was after the Area MP Wilson Kajwengye complained that despite complaints to the Ministry, not much has been done to control the flies that have affected the cattle for the last five years.

“For five years, the people of Nyabushozi have fought Tsetse Fly infestation but it seems we are losing the fight. The Ministry of Agriculture has tried to intervene but minimally. We now want new measures to control the flies,” he said.

He said it is estimated that about 100,000 herds have suffered the brunt of the vector causing tremendous losses to the farmers.

“The farmers produce both milk and meat and it's well known that the district contributes tremendously to both meat and milk production. It is estimated that we have lost about sh20b annually from the sale of milk and sh15b from the sale of beef,” he said.

He appealed to the Ministry to intensify the study of tsetse fly measures including the development of a drug that deals with the vector.
