Justice Jane Frances Abodo, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), has hailed Dr Ken Chapman as a beacon of hope, a pioneer of progress, and a dedicated servant of humanity.

Speaking at a fundraising dinner to support the construction of a state-of-the-art dental complex in honour of Chapman’s over 45 years of service as a missionary dentist in Uganda, Abodo acknowledged his lifelong commitment to the country.

"For 45 years, Chapman has dedicated his life to the people of Uganda, bringing not just dental care but also education and hope to countless individuals," she said.

His work at Mengo Hospital laid the foundation for modern dental services in Uganda. Mengo Hospital is a private, not-for-profit facility.

"I have confidence that his training has influenced generations of professionals. As we celebrate his life and work today, we are reminded of the impact one individual can have," Abodo added.

She expressed optimism that the planned dental complex would not only enhance access to modern dental care but also serve as a centre for specialised dental education and training.

Retired Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Henry Luke Orombi, praised Chapman for his contributions to Uganda’s healthcare sector, noting that his legacy would be remembered for generations.

He urged Ugandans to support the expansion of the complex and proposed naming it "Chapman Dental Complex Mengo" to ensure his name remains linked to Mengo Hospital for as long as it exists.

The facility, estimated to cost about sh12 billion, will include a general wing, private wing, specialist clinics, a minor theatre, and a dental laboratory, among other features.

Dr Nevis Agirembabazi, head of the Mengo Hospital dental unit, recounted that the hospital’s dental clinic was founded in 1980 by Dr Chapman, initially relying on donated second-hand dental equipment.

By the late 1990s, much of the equipment had significantly deteriorated. However, divine providence and support from generous donors enabled the clinic to acquire new equipment, leading to the commissioning of the current facility in 2005.

Agirembabazi noted that the clinic now serves patients from all walks of life, with daily numbers reaching approximately 80 to 90 patients.

Recent data from Makerere University indicates that many HIV-positive children in Kampala suffer from dental caries, yet only a few receive fillings.

In an interview on Monday, March 24, 2025, Dr Catherine Lutalo Mwesigwa, a dental public health specialist and senior lecturer at Makerere University, highlighted the challenges in oral healthcare. She noted that high treatment costs limit access to care and that oral health remains a low priority for many.
