The Old Boys of Busoga College Mwiri have paid glowing tribute to the Prime-Minister Emeritus of Uganda, the Rt Hon Dr Ruhakana Rugunda for his unwavering commitment and determination to revive the school’s glorious presence and academic excellence.

They praised him with even greater gratitude for his visionary leadership and wise counsel during the many years he has served as the Patron of their association.

They pronounced their gratitude during their leadership gathering at the former Premier’s Boardroom at Kingdom Kampala on May 10, 2024.

As a concrete gesture of their heart-rooted gratitude, the Mwiri alumni unanimously agreed to retain Dr Rugunda as their Patron. The proposal to retain Dr Ruganda was moved by the President Emeritus of Mwiri Old Boys Association (MOBA), Daniel Ronald Ruhweza. It was seconded and unanimously okayed by the alumni.

New leadership

During the function, alumnus Dan Mushabe was inaugurated as the President of MOBA.

He has succeeded alumnus Daniel Ronald Ruhweza.

In his inaugural address, Mushabe promised to work harmoniously with the alumni and all the other stakeholders to rejuvenate school.

Some of us chose to stand and contest because we were sick and tired of being asked whether Busoga College Mwiri still exists every time we met people and introduced ourselves as former students of the school. We felt this must stop.”

Mushabe said the change of leadership at MOBA is not a mere change of guards but a real fundamental change.

He later unveiled his strategic plans, promising to improve the school’s infrastructure.

He also promised to continue the mentorship and counselling programmes that the association put in place.

“Mwiri is a great historic school that has ticked all the boxes. It has produced a President, a Prime Ministers, Speakers. It produced the motto: Kulwa Katonda N’eggwanga Lyaffe (For God and Our Country) and gave it to the country. Mwiri is a land-lord with an estimated 600 acres and possibly one square mile of land. How can we compete with a school with one building and half an acre of land?!”

“Mwiri has been a sleeping giant but it is now awake. Yes, we have been lagging behind for a while but we are now moving on. We have the mandate of the people. We shall revive and elevate Mwiri. The sky is the limit. We are all starving for success. As the President of MOBA, I will always wake up thinking and working for Mwiri,” Mushabe vowed.

The school’s reigning headteacher, Peter Sibukule also expressed his determination to restore the school’s former prominence.

Dr Ruhakana Rugunda commended the outgoing leaders for their strategic activities which he said have successfully brought back Mwiri in focus.

“Mwiri’s contribution to the country has been exemplary. The contribution must be accelerated and enhanced.”

As one of the activities during the gathering, the outgoing leaders of the association and other alumni who have supported the association in an extra-ordinary manner were given accolades of appreciation.

The function was also surprisingly graced by the President of Namagunga Old Girls Association (NOGA), Lady Bridget Baine.
