Lwamata Health Centre III’s new buildings lie idle over lack of equipment

Luwazagga noted that when the Rotary Club of Nakasero Central visited in 2019, the facility had old and dilapidated beds and mattresses. The club donated 10 beds and 10 mattresses, sparking infrastructure improvements.

The in-charge of Lwamata Health Centre III, Noah Luwazagga, has appealed to the government to equip the newly constructed health centre buildings to better serve the increasing population.

“We are happy government built for us new infrastructures to accommodate the growing population, but in the construction, the budget for the equipment was not included, and this has delayed our occupation of the new buildings,” Luwazagga said.

Luwazagga noted that when the Rotary Club of Nakasero Central visited in 2019, the facility had old and dilapidated beds and mattresses. The club donated 10 beds and 10 mattresses, sparking infrastructure improvements.

He added that the government later provided three additional beds, a small but important contribution given the growing number of patients seeking care.

Luwazagga made the appeal during the launch of Polio Month by the Rotary Club of Nakasero Central, held under the theme “Together We End Polio” at Lwamata Health Centre III in Kiboga District on November 8, 2025.

“The polio month is normally set for October, but since the health centre partnered with Rotary, the dates were extended to all, including cancer, diabetes testing, normally concluded with advisory health talks to the community,” he explained.

Luwazagga said Rotarians visited the health centre because of their partnership to promote health and education in Lwamata subcounty, which prompted government expansion of the new structures.

“During this polio month, all vaccinated diseases will be handled, including cancer and diabetic diseases. We shall also handle the HIV/Aids testing and offering counselling services to the community,” he said.

He noted that once the new structures are completed, they expect to handle over 500 births monthly, but added that without equipment, it will be impossible to move into the new buildings.

The president of the Rotary Club of Nakasero Central, James Agaba, thanked the community for maintaining good relations and their cooperation in improving public health.

Agaba said he was grateful that the support given to the health workers had been sustained and pledged continued assistance. He advised the health personnel to look after the fruit trees planted by Rotary, noting that they had started bearing fruit.

Meanwhile, a total of 35 desks were donated to Magale Bright Primary School, and 10 scholarships were pledged for the best-performing pupils in Primary Five and Six last year, to continue until they complete their education.

The school, privately owned, was established to help pupils who previously had to walk six kilometres to the nearest government school.

Agaba added that last year, Rotary began constructing eco-san toilets to address sanitation challenges caused by high water levels that prevented deep pit latrines from being dug.

He appealed to men in the community to form SACCOs so that they, too, could receive support.

Nurse Prosy Namusoke said that due to the comfort provided by improved services, some patients are reluctant to leave the hospital after recovery. She noted that services have improved significantly.

She added that in the past, when the buildings were dilapidated, few patients came for treatment, unlike today when the health workers spend the entire day attending to them.

Alfred Opio, aged 68, who came to test for prostate cancer, said Rotary has helped them avoid the high costs of private clinics. He noted that this support especially benefits those with cancer and diabetes.
