Low turn up for Source of the Nile half marathon in Jinja
Uganda Athletics Federation President Dominic Otuchet warned that his committee will use an iron fist to punish clubs that organise local events without their authority.
A bitter-looking Otuchet was referring to the Uganda Wildlife Authority ( UWA) that organised a half marathon event on the same date the Federation organised the source of the Nile half marathon in Jinja.
Out of the expected 106 runners, only 57 made it to the event in Jinja something that angered the Federation questioning UWA officials who undermined the Jinja event.
"As UAF we condemn those individuals who run events without our knowledge. As a Federation, we are going to engage them and take action on clubs that do not organize events without noticing the Federation," warned Otuchet.
In the Source of the Nile half marathon, Isaac Mande Kibet emerged victorious when he recorded a time of 1:04:48 to walk home with shs2m.
The Arua-based runner won the tight event beating Erzin club's Jonathan Akankwasa who himself won Shs 1m by 8 seconds to the finishing line at Health Fast Gym in Jinja.
"It's my first time to win a marathon event, and In so doing, I found it hard even to maintain my pace. But I will use this spot to try and involve myself in many qualifiers to feature for the national team in Olympics 2028," said Kibet.
Meanwhile, the Uganda Wildlife Authority UWA club's Annet Chelangat warned that the high terraces at her training territory in Bukwo simplified her victory in the ladies category.
