Rwanda’s Foreign Minister Vincent Biruta and his DRCongo counterpart Christophe Lutundula on Thursday, March 21, met in the Angolan capital Luanda for high-level consultations meant to analyse the issue of security and peace in eastern DR Congo, the New Times, Rwanda has reported.

The meeting of the two countries delegations followed the recent meetings that Angola’s President Joao Lourenço hosted with Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame and DRC leader Felix Tshisekedi.

Lourenço is the mediator between Rwanda and DR Congo under the African Union-backed Luanda peace process, which seeks to amend diplomatic relations that were affected by the armed conflict in eastern DR Congo.

The mediation of Angolan President João Lourenço in his capacity as the Chair of the International Conference on Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), focused on ways to end the insecurity in eastern DR Congo.

The Angolan leader is expected to host the meeting of Presidents Tshisekedi and Kagame, according to reports from Luanda.

The two leaders (Tshisekedi and Kagame) in July 2022 met in the same city as part of the ongoing efforts to ease tension between the two neighbours.

It is reported that during Lourenço's separate meeting with the two leaders, Tshisekedi and Kagame agreed to have a tripartite engagement, seeking to find a lasting solution to decades-old violence in eastern DR Congo.

DR Congo accuses Rwanda of supporting the rebels, allegations the Rwandan government dismisses.

Rwanda accuses the Congolese armed forces (FARDC) an armed group linked to the 1994 Genocide in Rwanda.

Eastern DR Congo has been volatile for nearly 30 years and remains home to more than 130 armed groups. Multiple interventions have failed to end decades of violence.
