We all know those women whose look belie their age. It seems as though they pulled the handbrake on growing old and forever look young.

There is not a crease or wrinkle around their eyes, on their brows and their skin seems to be forever glowing.

Perhaps to be told that it is the expensive creams and soaps is partially right but there are cheaper ways to that look.

Know your skin type

Ever heard of the saying “knowledge is power”? It is true even for skincare. We do not all have the same skin type so what works for someone else might not work for you.

Go to a professional beautician if you do not know your skin type and find out. Some have normal skin, others have dry, oily, sensitive skin or even a combination.

In arming yourself with this knowledge you will save thousands of shillings wasted on ineffective products.

Appropriate products

Now that you have found out your skin type, buy appropriate products for it. If you have oily skin, go for a water-based cleanser and toners and if you have dry skin opt for the kinds of milk or creamy ones to add a glow to the skin.

If you have combination skin, buy products specifically manufactured for that type.

Age is not just a number

When it comes to skincare, age is not just a number. The collagen reduces in our skins as we age, causing it to loosen and sag in some places.

Wrinkles will appear on the brow, in the corners of the eyes. To minimise their appearance, buy age suitable products.

There are products made for mature skin, starting at 35 and above. Some are for younger skin and the composition is designed to meet its needs.

Harsh lemony cleansers or soaps are too hard on soft mature skin and dry it out as opposed to creamy or milky products which moisturise, soften and smoothen it.

The trick is not to wait until you are 55 to start using mature skin products.

Protection

This is needed to keep the skin and preserve it. The easiest you can do is buy a day cream with a sun protection factor of about SPF 30 to shield your skin from the harsh effects of the sun.

Use it daily whenever you are outside.

Diet and exercise

This is a good combination for maintaining good healthy skin. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables and water keeps the skin glowing as opposed to one full of oily, spicy foods accompanied by lots of alcohol and heavy smoking.

So feed your skin right and it will be healthy!
