Joseph Sseganyi a professional painter and manager Jose River Coatings Limited says one of the most significant drawbacks of oil-based paints is their lengthy drying time. Unlike water-based paints, which can dry to the touch in an hour or two, oil-based paints can take several hours or even days to fully cure.
This extended drying period can lead to delays in your kitchen project, making it inconvenient for households that rely on their kitchens for daily meals.
Oil-based paints have a strong, often overwhelming odour due to the solvents used in their formulation. While the smell may dissipate over time, it can linger for days, making the kitchen uncomfortable for cooking or family gatherings during and shortly after the painting process. This can be particularly problematic for those with sensitivities or allergies.
Sseganyi says kitchens are notorious for spills, splatters, and messes. While oil-based paints are durable, they are also much harder to clean. If grease or food stains occur, cleaning them off an oil-based surface can require harsh solvents, which can be cumbersome and potentially harmful to your health and the environment. On the other hand, water-based paints allow for easier cleaning with just soap and water.
Another concern with oil-based paints is their tendency to yellow as they age, especially when exposed to heat and light. This can be particularly noticeable in kitchens, where the walls may be subjected to both. The warm, inviting colors of your kitchen can quickly become dulled, leading to a less appealing space.
Muhammad Nsereko a construction expert says there is a growing emphasis on sustainability and environmental responsibility. Oil-based paints contain higher levels of volatile organic compounds, which can be harmful to both human health and the environment. Water-based paints, in contrast, are typically lower in volatile organic compounds and are often marketed as more eco-friendly alternatives, making them a better choice for conscious consumers. Given these drawbacks, many homeowners and professional painters recommend using water-based paints in the kitchen.
Water-based paints dry quickly, allowing for faster project completion. You can typically apply multiple coats in one day without worrying about long waiting times, making it ideal for busy families. With significantly less odour, Sseganyi says water-based paints create a more pleasant environment during application and drying. This is especially advantageous in kitchens, where cooking aromas already fill the air.
According to Sseganyi water-based paints can be cleaned up with soap and water, making post-painting cleanup a breeze. This also means that any spills or mistakes can be easily rectified without the need for harsh chemicals. “Water-based paints tend to maintain their color better over time, resisting yellowing and fading. This helps keep your kitchen looking fresh and vibrant”, he says.
