Not all children will welcome the first plunge into a swimming pool for swimming lessons.
To allay children’s fears, swimming coach, Catherine Nakimuli shared the following tips:
1. Always swim with an adult watching. Never swim alone. Make sure a grown-up or lifeguard can see you.
2. Learn how to float and breathe. Floating on your back and calm breathing help you stay safe if you get tired.
3. Know where it’s safe to swim. Stay in areas meant for swimming and follow the rules of the pool or beach.
4. Take your time in the water. Go slowly when getting in. Don’t rush, push, or jump without checking first.
5. Listen to your swim teacher and lifeguard. They help keep everyone safe and having fun.
6. If you feel scared or tired, stop and ask for help. It’s okay to rest or get out of the water when your body needs it.
7. Don’t hold your breath for too long. Breathe often and stay relaxed.
8. Be kind and careful with others. No pushing, pulling, or dunking. Help keep your friends safe too.
9. Respect the water. Water can be fun, but it can also be powerful. Always treat it with care.
10. Swimming should be fun. Have fun. Smile and enjoy learning something that keeps you safe for life.
