Reassume your family obligations, Msgr Katende tells husbands

Katende explained that from the beginning of creation, God appointed the husband as the head of the family, which is why it is misguided for any man to assume that the burden of providing for the home belongs to the wife

The leader of Foyer de Charite, Namugongo, Msgr John Waynand Katende, has criticised men who become idle in their homes and leave all responsibilities to their wives. He urged Catholic husbands to recommit themselves to their family obligations.

Katende explained that from the beginning of creation, God appointed the husband as the head of the family, which is why it is misguided for any man to assume that the burden of providing for the home belongs to the wife.

“These days, we see many families where the wife is the one managing all the affairs of the home, and the husband is just as dependent as a baby. Now is the time for you to reassume your leadership role in the family as the head of the home. If the father neglects his roles, the family cannot attain holistic development,” said Msgr. Katende.

He was presiding over the 30th anniversary of the Catholic Men’s Guild in Kampala Archdiocese at the Uganda Martyrs Catholic Shrine Namugongo in Wakiso district on November 16, 2025.

Msgr Katende advised Catholic husbands to emulate the Christian witness and leadership of St Joseph Mukasa Balikudembe, the patron saint of their organisation, who, he said, was unwavering in his religious conviction and commitment to truth and justice, even reproaching King Mwanga II when he killed Bishop James Hannington.

He emphasised that husbands and wives play complementary roles in their homes and should therefore support and respect each other.

The chairman of the Catholic Men’s Guild in Kampala Archdiocese, Dr George William Ssekanjakko, encouraged practising Catholic men to take up leadership positions within the organisation, saying it needed to be driven to greater heights.

He explained that his executive planned to work even harder to implement the organisation’s strategic plan, which focuses on the holistic empowerment of members and strengthening their commitment to the guild and its objectives.

The Mass was concelebrated by the diocesan chaplain of the Catholic Men’s Guild, Fr Godfrey Kawuki, and the diocesan archivist, Fr Anthony Musuubire. An all-male choir from Ndeeba Parish led the singing during the celebration.
