KANUNGU - On Tuesday, March 10, 2026, authorities from Rubanda Town Council arrested Fortunate Kyarikunda of Kiringa Parish in Kambuga Sub-county, Kanungu District, for breaching a marriage promise.

She later appeared before the Rukungiri Chief Magistrate’s Court, where she was committed to civil prison for six months for non-payment of the court-ordered amount.

According to court records, the dispute dates back to January 2023 when the Kanungu Grade One Magistrate’s Court ruled that Kyarikunda had breached a promise to marry Tumwiine and ordered her to refund Shs9,439,100 that he had spent supporting her education while they were planning to marry.

Kyarikunda was remanded to Rukungiri Government Prison on Tuesday by the Chief Magistrate’s Court in Rukungiri District after she failed to comply with a court order requiring her to refund money spent on her by her former fiancé, Richard Tumwiine.

The court also awarded an additional Sh1 million to Tumwiine of Kagoongo–Nyakagyezi, in Nyarutojo Parish, also in Kambuga Sub-county, as general damages for the inconvenience and psychological distress he suffered.

The court had ruled that she failed to compensate her former partner following a court ruling in a breach-of-promise-to-marry case.

The court heard that the initial sum of Sh9,439,100 had accumulated to Sh14,099,100 due to accrued costs and related charges.

Kyarikunda did not make any comments during the court proceedings.
