KAMPALA - Almost 110 orphanages and vulnerable mosques in Kampala city and nearby suburbs have received donations of food and other essential items to help them in the holy month of Ramadhan.

Muslims started fasting the holy month of Ramadhan, which is one of the five pillars of Islam, on February 18, 2026.

This fasting lasts between 29 to 30 days, and during this period Muslims are required to abstain from food, drinks and sexual intercourse for the married from dawn until sunset.

Uganda Social Educational Welfare Association executive director Meerasa Saleem says they have donated to orphanages and Muslim families to ensure they receive proper medical care, education and nutrition during this holy month.

Also, they have collaborated with multiple groups of companies, including Mukwano Group of Companies, Ruparelia Group, Mandela Group of Companies and Gateway Group of Companies, Saleem adds.

The handover ceremony at Mukwano Mall, Old Kampala in Kampala city was on February 22, 2026.

Orphans and Widows of AIDS Uganda’s executive director, Yakub Kayongo Nsereko, expressed gratitude, saying companies should continue providing support because different families face displacement and poverty, while the month of fasting is the time of testing your kindness and faith.

Nsereko requested charitable organisations, apart from providing them with food, should also donate them essential services such as computers, printers, healthcare, educational resources, among other,s to help them become self-independent.

Another beneficiary, Mariam Nalubega, says it is a significant challenge during the month of fasting to secure adequate food to break the fast (Iftar) and for the pre-dawn meal.

This act of feeding will enable them to be grateful and compassionate in the month of Ramathan.
