Father of ex-Speaker Jacob Oulanyah dies at 97

Nathan Okori, the father of the late Jacob Oulanyah, former Speaker of Parliament, has passed away at the age of 97.
He passed away earlier Friday, March 20, 2026, evening at St. Mary’s Hospital, Lacor in Gulu City.
His death comes exactly four years after the death of his son, Oulanyah, who passed away on March 20, 2022, in Seattle, United States, where he had been receiving medical treatment.
Oulanyah served as Speaker from May 2021 until his death, and previously as Deputy Speaker from 2011 to 2021. On April 8, 2022, he was buried at the family home in Lalogi, Omoro District.
Francis Emuna, the late Oulanyah’s younger brother, confirmed their father’s death but did not disclose the cause.
Andrew Ojok Oulanyah, the Member of Parliament for Omoro County in Omoro District, said his grandfather's body had been taken to Lacor Hospital’s mortuary for a postmortem.
According to information obtained from a source close to the family, Okori was rushed to the hospital on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, after developing respiratory complications.
