KATAKWI - Vice-President Maj (rtd) Jessica Alupo has urged religious leaders to continue praying for peace in families, national unity and the success of government prosperity programmes among Christians.
Alupo made the appeal while meeting over 700 religious leaders from various denominations in Katakwi district on Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at the district headquarters.
She acknowledged that while Katakwi had suffered insecurity from Karamojong warriors for more than four decades, peace had now been restored, thanks to joint efforts from leaders and the community.
She underscored the power of prayer in sustaining national peace and family unity and urged religious leaders to actively engage in sensitizing the public about ongoing government initiatives aimed at eradicating poverty.
She assured the clergy that the Government remains committed to upholding peace, unity and development across the country.
The Rev. Vincent Ewatu, the chairperson of the Council of Elders under the Katakwi Pastors and Elders Fellowship (KAPEF), used the platform to raise concerns about the economic hardships faced by religious leaders and their congregations.
He appealed to Alupo for support in introducing income-generating projects and entrepreneurship training for clergy, to help expand their financial base.
According to Ewatu, with access to improved technologies, better livestock breeds, and quality crop varieties — combined with enhanced skills — clergy members could not only improve their livelihoods but also build permanent church structures.
He further requested government support for the Katakwi United Christian Community Cooperative Society Limited, citing the absence of a banking institution in the district to offer affordable credit.
In response, Alupo pledged to engage relevant ministries and partners to support religious leaders and the Christian community in Katakwi.
She also committed shillings 50 million to boost the cooperative society for clergy, aimed at promoting financial empowerment and development in the district.
