Staying in a small place shouldn’t stop you from having a garden. You just have to look around your home for a wall that can accommodate a vertical garden.

For instance, Stellah Kisha, stays in a tight apartment in Najeera, a suburb of Kampala but she has a flourishing garden on her balcony. It’s a vertical pallet garden.

Instead of flowers, she chose culinary herbs which she planted in red planters. They include; mints, rosemary, celery and basil.

Ben Mitala, a gardener with Mitala classic compound designs says, a vertical pallet garden is an innovative solution that allows you to grow plants vertically. Apart from giving you food, the garden also elevates the beauty of your home.

There are different kinds of vertical gardens, pallets being one of them. In this type, you utilize the pallets but ensure the type you choose is durable, eco-friendly and affordable.

He says some pallets on the market are made from weak wood while others are treated with harmful chemicals based on what they are used for. Remember, those pallets are just recycled. But you can also make your own.

“Before embarking on this garden, have a plan or design. Also, ensure to choose a good wall that will hold that garden well,” he says.

Also, consider sunlight and water exposure, weight-bearing capacity of the wall plus the flow of traffic.

Relatedly, have the pallets, planters, nails, hooks and plants ready. The plants must be those that thrive in vertical gardens like the ferns, herbs, succulents and many flowering vines.

Also, the planters or containers should have good drainage to prevent water logging and fill them with suitable potting soil, not just any soil.

All to say; this garden will flourish only if you take good care of it by watering, pruning, weeding and fertilizing the plants regularly, even when you are away.
