Weasel announces date, plans for comeback concert

31st May 2024

"People said I am mentally disorganised, but it is not true. I  am still tortured by the death of my brother Radio. When he died, a lot of things changed in my life; I hated music and stopped performing as a form of mourning, which made me broke since our source of income was the stage," Weasel said.

GoodLyfe Crew, a music label consisting of singers Weasel and the late Mowzey Radio (Moses Ssekibogo Nakintije), has revealed plans for its concert titled Welcome to the Goodlyfe.

Weasel, real name Douglas Mayanja, who made the announcement on May 29, said the concert is scheduled for August 9 at Hotel Africana in Kampala.

However, Kream Productions singer Haruna Mubiru is fighting for the same date and venue to stage his own concert. On who of the two artistes will stage a concert at the venue and on the date is a story for another day.

Organised by Nobert Events, the concert is a milestone for Weasel after the death of Mowzey Radio in February 2018.
The duo’s last performance together was in 2017 as they celebrated their 10-year music journey. They released chart-topping hits such as Bread and Butter, Kuku and Nakudata.  This time, it will be a deeply emotional moment for Weasel as he will be performing without Mowzey Radio.

When Radio died, Weasel's career started declining and and he ceased performing altogether, which led to financial challenges.

During a phone interview on Wednesday, May 29, Weasel said he started hatching a plan to organise the concert in January 2024.

"I thought of how to maintain Goodlyfe as a record label without Radio, my brother.  I always failed to decide on the right route until I went back and revised his advice that he used to give me on never giving up on music with or without him. It’s when I realised that I should look for something in line with music," he said.

Weasel expressed disappointment that people judge him a musical failure.

"Others said I am mentally disorganised, but it is not true. I  am still tortured by the death of my brother Radio. When he died, a lot of things changed in my life; I hated music and stopped performing as a form of mourning, which made me broke since our source of income was the stage. It's where we used to get the money to inject in other businesses," he said.

What organiser of the concert says

On the same day - Wednesday, May 29, 2024 - we talked to the organiser of the event, Nobert Events, who said the concert is targeting the lovers of good music and the friends of Goodlyfe "as we shall be celebrating the life of our brother Mowzey Radio."

"At the same event, we shall welcome our brother Weasel Manizo back on stage after a long time as a sign of encouragement that he can make it without Radio. Weasel is a talented artiste who can stand on his own and make good music because he has the experience and capacity. It's only that people discouraged him and the death of his brother affected him. Weasel had mental stress caused by the death of Radio, but it will end when we bring him back musically," he said.

Norbert Events said his aim is not to mint money out of the concert.

"Instead, I am interested in contributing to Uganda’s music industry. This year and the coming year, I want to focus on making brands. I am done with Ray G (western Uganda-based artiste who held successful concert at Lugogo Cricket Oval on May 10, 2024). Now Weasel is next. A lot of artistes will perform and all those who have collaborations with Goodlyfe. The money collected will be divided into two, where Weasel will take some to start up a studio and recruit new members. The other money will be given to the children of Mowzey Radio for their basic needs. I believe in talents and possibilities. After this concert, I will take the responsibility of managing Weasel and we shall make wanders in this very country," he vowed.
