KAMPALA - A Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) instructor attached to Kaweweta Recruit Training School (KRTS) in Nakaseke district has been convicted of assaulting a recruit.

RA/253630 Private Suzan Adeke, 24, was Monday (February 12, 2024) convicted by the General Court Martial (GCM) at Makindye in Kampala after finding her guilty of assault causing actual bodily harm.

The charge contravenes sections 236 of the Penal Code Act, Cap 120, and attracts a maximum five-year jail term, upon conviction.

Adeke, also a matron at KRTS and resident of Kongodi village, Kogondi Parish in Kachumbala, Bukedea District, was convicted by the GCM chairman Brig. Gen. Robert Freeman Mugabe.

“Since you have admitted to all the state’s brief facts, you are hereby convicted on your own plea of guilty, and be remanded back to Makindye Police Military Quarter Guard till February 19, 2024, when you will be brought back here for your sentence,” said Gen. Mugabe.

Prior, the prosecution led by Lt Col Raphael Mugisha, Lt Alex Mukhwana, Private Anthony Phillip Olupot, and Private Regina Nanzala told the court that on February 12, 2023, while at KRTS in Nakaseke district, employed as an Instructor, during an exercise ‘Kipindi’, Adeke assaulted recruit Brenda Kisakye by kicking her, thereby causing her actual bodily harm.

Capt. Simon Nsubuga Busagwa and Private Priscilla Kakande represented the convict and sought a lenient sentence from the court, saying the latter is remorseful, did not waste the court’s time by pleading guilty, and is a first-time offender.
