The executive director of the Uganda National Cultural Centre (UNCC), Francis Peter Ojede, has said music has the potential to employ many youth in Uganda.
Speaking to artistes during the UNCC World Music Day dialogue 2024 at the National Theatre in Kampala on Thursday, June 20, he noted that music has the ability to create jobs and generate substantial revenue if done professionally
"Music stands as one of the most powerful mediums of expression known to humanity. Throughout history, music has not only been a means of correcting and reprimanding leaders as well as represent views of the society,” Ojede said.
He expressed happiness to see vocalists, songwriters, producers, distributors and promoters, come together just to have a conversation about the state of Ugandan music industry.
“Ugandan musicians need to have their identity whereby if Ugandan music is played anywhere on a global stage, everyone will know that it is Ugandan. Therefore, there is need for Ugandan artistes to carve out a niche in the global music scene, ensuring that their cultural heritage and musical innovations are recognised and celebrated worldwide,” Ojede pointed out.
He said with the 65 indigenous ethnic communities, there is a lot that can be done to create content that is in line with traditional Ugandan culture.
