UNCC board tours National Theatre, Nommo Gallery

UNCC executive director Francis Peter Ojede revealed to the board members that Cabinet had proposed that the gallery be relocated to another area because its operations are being affected by being near the Nakasero State Lodge.

The new board of directors of the Uganda National Cultural Centre (UNCC) toured Nommo Gallery and the National Theatre during their induction on the operations of the two government entities on Tuesday,   May 7, 2024.

They were led by the board chairman, Prof. Okaka Opio in the company of other  members, including singers Phina Mugerwa Masanyalaze, Lillian Mbabazi and Moses Ssali (Bebe Cool),  comedian Hannington Bugingo, Dr. Richard Komakech, and Juliana Naumo.

When they reached Nommo Gallery, they were received by the curator, Phillip Balimunisi, who guided them to the tour of the whole place while explaining to them the historical importance of the place the visual artists of Uganda

UNCC executive director Francis Peter Ojede welcomed the board members and told them the plans the gender ministry has as far as managing of the place is concerned.

He revealed to them that Cabinet had proposed that the gallery be relocated to another area because its operations are being affected by being near the Nakasero State Lodge.

“The cabinet proposed that the gallery be relocated to another place that will be between 5 to 10 acres and the place shall be in an area that will be accessible by the general public,” Ojede said.

During the visit, the team discovered that part of the Nommo Gallery land was cut off by State House

The proposal to relocate the gallery was endorsed by the new UNCC board members, who said that this is the best opportunity for the Ministry of Gender to find a suitable location for the project

They proposed that the house where the gallery is be preserved for history purposes.
