Ugandan entertainers gaining global recognition

While many Ugandan entertainers have achieved significant success within Uganda, some have gained broader international recognition and are arguably ‘bigger’ outside of Uganda in terms of global reach and impact.

While many Ugandan entertainers have achieved significant success within Uganda, some have gained broader international recognition and are arguably ‘bigger’ outside of Uganda in terms of global reach and impact.

Artistes like Kenzo have had their shine with BET Awards and collaborations with famed international artistes like Jidenna, the Triplet Ghetto Kids have received a golden buzzer and received substantial praise.

Is that all there is? Who else is lapping in international recognition or is on the verge?

Bebe Cool

He is a household name who has been singing for close to 30 years. His moniker is “ Big is Big”.  After holding forte in Uganda for many years, Bebe Cool has woken up to the need for broader international recognition. His Break the Chains album, a fusion of Afro Beats, Afro Pop and Afro-House is taking him beyond borders.   Bebe Cool, who was recently in Nairobi, said the album will always help him conquer borders.   He tweeted: Nairobi, the love, the warm welcome, the vibe, thank you for the memories,” he said.  After years of singing, Bebe Cool believes that is the album that will see him perform for full crowds at the O2 Arena or Hyde Park in the UK like Davido or Burna Boy, or will it?

Joshua Baraka

He is big in size but even bigger in prospects. However, even with the next big star tag, Baraka remains humble.  Joshua Baraka is a popular singer and songwriter known for his soulful music and growing international recognition. He is considered one of Uganda's most-streamed artists and is gaining attention as a promising new talent from Africa. His music, particularly his song "Wrong Places," has gained popularity both locally and internationally. He has been featured on Rolling Stone’s list of Africa’s promising artists. He is also recognised on Spotify’s list of growing African artistes.  He has collaborated with artists like Joeboy, Simi, and Bien, among others. His latest track, “wrong places,” surpassed 5 million streams in less than 30 days.

Sandra Nankoma

If Sandra Nankoma were to ever perform at Lugogo Cricket Oval, many would ask, Why? Who is she? However, like Biblical prophets, she is bigger away from home. The singer, songwriter, composer, and performer of Afro-soul and jazz music has won more international acclaim than at home.

She won the best female award in the African Inspirational Music (Afrima Awards 2018). She has also toured Africa, performing in cities including Nairobi, Arusha, Abidjan, and Kigali, and made a one-off appearance in Paris.

DJ Andy Skillz (Andrew Mumanya)

If you search on any top 10 list of Uganda’s local DJs, his name will not feature prominently.  When you flip the script and engage the international and diplomatic community, he is king. Two things are constant about the fun-loving diplomats.   They love  Andy Skillz’ music.  He is the David Guetta of Uganda’s music, owing to his popularity.  He has played at the US Marines Ball, Ireland’s St. Patrick Ball and at many diplomatic missions, some of whom fly him abroad to play in their countries.

His style ranges from house and techno to EDM, trance, Afrobeat, or reggaeton, depending on his audience.  Behind the decks, he exudes charisma—syncing beats to create an unforgettable experience.  He is the talk of the corporate and diplomatic world when it comes to lighting up the night life.  He combines his amazing technical and musical gifts with an infectious, energetic, and passionate personality.  Other Ugandans who come close to Andy Skillz are DJ Kampire and DJ Hola Jeffe. He recently left  the crowd gawking when he played at the Limoncello Italian Brunch at Meditteraneo.

Maddox Sematimba

Madoxx Sematimba

Whereas some have dwelt on his supposed downfall, Madoxx Sematimba is one of Uganda’s truly global entertainers, with his ‘oldies’ repertoire of songs.  He is big in Europe, notably Sweden, and had, until recently, flown in international back up artistes.  He believes that for an artist to make it to the international stage is mainly a role of their management and existing systems in the entertainment industry.

Jose Chameleone

He is known for his international appeal.  He has successfully blended different genres, notably reggae, dancehall, and Afrobeat.  His music resonates not only in Uganda but mainly across East Africa and beyond, making him a prominent figure in the international music scene
