The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has struck a reconciliatory tone after suspending the song “Mukube Paver” by emerging artist Dynaso Wegoso, following a high-level meeting between the musician and the Commission’s Executive Director, George William Nyombi Thembo.

In a statement, Thembo said the engagement was candid and constructive, offering a possible path forward after days of public debate over the ban.

“I met with artist Dynaso Wegoso following the Commission’s decision to suspend the song ‘Mukube Paver,’” Thembo said, reaffirming that while UCC supports artistic expression, its primary duty is to protect the public, especially young audiences from harmful content.

The song, which gained traction on social media and urban radio, was flagged for allegedly promoting violence and encouraging inappropriate behavior. Its suspension drew mixed reactions: some in the creative industry questioned the limits of artistic freedom, while others backed the regulator’s intervention.

During the meeting, Thembo warned the artist about the long-term risks of controversial content in the digital era.

“Digital footprints are permanent,” he said. “In the age of social media, a single controversial track can jeopardize a lifetime of corporate endorsements and professional growth.”

Despite the firm warning, the meeting ended positively, with both sides agreeing to balance creativity with responsibility.

“I am pleased to share that we have reached a constructive path forward,” Thembo said. “UCC is not here to frustrate talent but to ensure sanity within our airwaves.”

As part of the resolution, the Commission committed to supporting Wegoso in refining his music to align with community standards without stifling his artistic voice. Thembo noted that this approach reflects UCC’s broader goal of nurturing Uganda’s growing creative sector while maintaining regulatory oversight.
