The decision to do the big chop is rarely a one-step issue. Most ponder it for a while.

Others, like Stella Namukasa did it as a way of healing.

" I had just had my first baby and was in an abusive relationship. I had no job, lived far away from my family and was basically at rock bottom," she narrates.

She later moved back to get her father's house with her baby and started life all over again.

" I cut off my hair because I wanted to forget the past. I needed a new look to help me shade off that past and start all over," she says.

For Dawn Kirabo it was a botched hair coloring job.

" I went to my usual hairstylist and he applied fake color to my hair. It started shedding rapidly, and left me with no choice but to cut it," she says.

She says she has done the big chop twice in a space of 6 years. Whenever she is stressed or desires a new look, she does it and admits it gets easier with time.

But before taking the plunge, there are a few tools one needs to help manage the new hairstyle.

  1. Spray bottle.

Joyce Kasumba, a dealer in hair products says the spray bottle is a necessity for holding water or hair mists which are great essentials for hair styling.

  1. Rigged sponge

One of the easiest styles needs small curls that can be created by the sponge.

" It has a punctured side and a rigged side which you can use to create sharp or gentle coils," she says. She adds that it is convenient and easy to use.

Wide-toothed combs, brushes and eat tail combs are necessary for styling.

  1. Hair clips/ separators

When the hair grows and needs styling,, holding it back can be cumbersome. Clips are therefore required to hold partitions in place and ease styling.

  1. Combs

Kasumba says depending on the length of the hair, wide-toothed combs, brushes and eat tail combs are necessary for styling.

" The rat tail gives neat partitions and the wide-toothed combs are important for detangling and styling," she explains

5. Satin bonnet/ scarf/ pillow cover

To keep the moisture in the hair, sleep in a satin pillowcase or use a satin bonnet. They prevent the hair from friction from cotton fabric and breakage.
