Tips on furnishing your new apartment

It is an exciting time when one enters a new apartment. For some, it is a chance to start over but especially for a newlywed couple.

Whether or not it is rented, or owned, the furnishing needs to be carefully planned for both beauty and functionality.

Ian Sendagala, the Managing Director of Home pro finishes and interiors guides that it is important for the couple to create harmony when furnishing their living space.

“The bedroom is the most important room for newlyweds. It is their safe haven and as such should be designed with creativity to create a romantic mood.

A good sturdy bed, beautiful beddings, and calm colors are some of the things that can help bring this to life. One can add scented candles, petals a mirror, and other things for beauty ” he says.

Another aspect to consider when furnishing an apartment is light. In addition to what natural light offers, there are artificial lights that also enhance mood and add to creating a beautiful interior.

“There are spotlights, for example, which can be warm or cool again depending on the desired mood. Nowadays the intensity of the lights can even be controlled on a mobile phone which makes it convenient for homeowners.

A wall of fame can be a beautiful addition to the home. Usually, it is painted a different colour to make it stand out and then decorated with photos to create memories. For example, the wedding and introduction photos can be hung on that wall together as opposed to having them scattered all over the living room. On such a wall, they not only look beautiful but creates some order in the room.

“Color and coherence is another factor that needs to be considered. When furnishing they create a theme, so that the colors do not look haphazard. This harmony is required to bring out the beauty of the furnishing.

You cannot have black artifacts, purple curtains, orange throw pillows, and a mix of other colours adorning your room because it looks confusing and incoherent. So, strive to create harmony,” he says.

When it comes to functionality Sendagala advises buying lots of crockery and cutlery because newlyweds tend to entertain a lot. Things like coasters, table mats, table runners, and table linen need to come to into play, all marrying into the theme colors of the house.

Furniture is a big part of furnishing but Sendagala pouts out that it can be tricky if ill-chosen.

“ The couch you choose should be able to fit within the space you have. It can be too small if the room is too big and it gets swallowed up, making it look miniature, but on the flip side, it can also be too big to allow for proper usage. Opening the door should not be difficult because the couch or the dining table is too big. It should be sizeable and comfortable for usage in the home,” he says.

Lastly, furnishing for newlyweds should create a merging of ideas. The masculine and feminine aspects can both feature harmoniously as the couple will share their space. Each will have a representation of their tastes and desires in their living space so ideally, both should contribute ideas so that the home does not overly masculine or feminine.
