Growth retention is a common haircare goal. However, it can also be elusive.

Rhona Nassanga, a housewife, says she has plaited her hair for a year in the hopes of getting length.

"Unfortunately it seems to be at the same length whenever I undo it and I get discouraged," she says.

Paul Kamya, a professional hairdresser says that the scalp is usually neglected and yet it plays a vital role in hair growth.

"The strands grow out of the scalp and it has pores, so it needs maintenance," he says.

Kamya says that a dirty scalp impedes hair growth because the pores are clogged with dirt and grime. This he explains is a result of sweat, dust, pomades, and other residue that gathers on it as the day goes on.

"Whether one is wearing a protective style or not, the scalp is supposed to be shampooed regularly, at least once a week to keep it clean and fresh," he says.

Whenever the scalp is washed do a scalp massage to stimulate blood circulation which will result in better hair growth.

"A scalp massager is easily available and it is also very relaxing," he explains.

Kamya advises against the usage of heavy pomades on the scalp because they attract dust.

Instead, he suggests the usage of organic oils like coconut oil, olive oil, or sea butter, which are easily absorbed and have a lighter consistency.

To this, he warns against sharing tools like combs and brushes as they can spread scalp infections from person to person.

"If the scalp is infected for example with dandruff, get it treated to keep it healthy and boost hair growth," he says.
