Veteran singer Daniel Kazibwe, aka Ragga Dee, has been elected to the board of the Uganda Federation of Movie Industry (UFMI).
He was elected during the organisation’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held at Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) offices on Friday.
Others elected to the board are film director Matthew Nabwiso, Yusuf Kinene and Sinan Kakembo, who will be representing film producers on the board, while Joseph Semanda and Faisal Katumba will represent performers.
After his election, Ragga Dee, who has been acting chairperson of the board for the past four years, said, “When I came in, the organisation was in a mess with no structures and operating systems. Thankfully, I have put it back in order. Among the many things I did, I paid off the sh24m rent arrears owed by the organisation,” he said.
Ragga Dee, who said he has over the years invested heavily in making films but with no returns, promised to introduce a digital management system that will enable Ugandan film-makers earn from their craft.
“The Federation, with support of URSB, have created a digital collection management system that will be used to register, license content creators and also enable them get paid for their films,” he said.
Uganda Registration Services Bureau Registrar General, Robert Mugabe, acknowledged the challenges affecting the Ugandan film industry and said they will do everything to support the sector.
“I urge all of you to take advantage of this new system we have brought on board. I therefore urge film-makers to register their films so that they can earn money from them,” he said.
The CEO of the Uganda Federation of Movie Industry (UFMI), Robert Womai, revealed that it was a landmark AGM as it attracted over 150 filmmakers drawn from across the country.
