In most home designs, when one is ushered into a living room, the first feature they set their eyes on is the wall unit.

It is a vital focal point which is usually neglected or in some homes, it is cluttered with lots of stuff. You step into such a space and tell that something is off in that corner.

Mariah Kiwagama, an interior designer, defines a wall unit as a piece of furniture that has several units. It is usually pushed against a wall of a room.

Some home owners use the wall unit as an entertainment corner, while others use it as storage. In that case, you will find books, cups, plates and trinkets. When used for entertainment, you find a TV set, music system and other accessories.

However, there are homes where the wall unit is used as a food serving area, or office nook.

Regardless of what you choose to turn it into, Maureen Nakabuye, a designer, advises you keep it beautiful and functional.

Choose a theme and colour palette that matches that of the living room. This means, whatever you choose to decorate with should either match or complement the other room accessories. Kiwagama says, you can add pictures, trinkets and plants to the wall unit.

“Don’t clutter this corner. Put a few pictures, scented candles, a plant or two and some books,” she says adding; “They should be arranged in a way that makes them visually appealing.”

Also, be careful while watering the plants lest the water affects the wood. Plants too should be able to thrive indoors where there is limited light. You can opt for water plants like lucky bamboo or creepers such as golden pathos among others. If space allows, add some baskets.
