The police have recovered the firearm stolen from a private guard responsible for securing the residence of socialite Zari Hassan, five weeks after the attack.

Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire revealed that the gun, belonging to Magnum – a private security firm, was retrieved on January 23, 2024, by operatives tasked to track the assailants.

The incident, which unfolded on the night of December 28, last year, occurred while Zari was allegedly away, leaving her armed guard with severe head injuries.

Owoyesigyire confirmed that the pursuit of the suspects remains ongoing.

Zari detailed the harrowing break-in at her residence in Munyonyo, where intruders forcibly entered, tied up, assaulted her guard, and proceeded to ransack her home.

The criminals even interrogated her family members for specific items and attempted to steal her cars before the timely intervention of the Police, forcing them to flee.

This incident adds to the concerning trend of aggressive robberies, particularly in Kampala, over the past four months, with a staggering 6,387 cases reported between January and August last year nationwide.

The Police Annual Crime Report for 2022 highlighted a total of 2,516 cases of aggravated robbery, compared to 1,956 cases in 2021.

The Criminal Investigations Directorate is yet to release the 2023 report.
