Music Review (Down Memory Lane): Mama We Made It – Maurice Kirya

Jan 17, 2024

Mama We Made It is Maurice’s most personal song, but more than that, it is also possibly his most technically-complete song. It has an aesthetic that is impossible to ignore – even Alien Skin would probably like it.

I have a great deal of respect for Maurice Kirya as a musician, and it is mostly because of songs like this. Mama We Made It was dedicated to his mother, and the lad wears his heart on his sleeve for this one.

Maurice is a prolific and gifted composer, but where he came up with the arrangement for this particular track, only the Lord knows.

Sam Bisaso, who produced this track, is something of a genius. He goes with a Motown 1970s sound that captures the nostalgic sentiment that Maurice was looking for. I know Maurice’s music was greatly influenced by his mother, something he mentioned to me in passing, but which this song brought back.

The production style on this is a throwback to The Temptations, or even Gladys Knight & the Pips; you can easily imagine either of those acts singing this tune.

The arrangement is neat (Sam is a neat producer) and the song opens with an acoustic guitar and a mute guitar doing the main instrumentation.

The instrumentation builds from that point and the rounded bass line that is added is smooth and just delightful. And the harmonies? Now that is what crooning sounds like.
Mama We Made It is Maurice’s most personal song, but more than that, it is also possibly his most technically-complete song.

It has an aesthetic that is impossible to ignore – even Alien Skin would probably like it. The song is a gem, and a worthwhile tribute to the person that inspired his music through the music she listened to.
