Because Miss Tourism Uganda beauty pageant is riding on the theme “I am My Culture” this year, the unveiling night last week at Emin Pasha Hotel accentuated the theme in dazzling fashion when over 30 contestants took to the stage.
The search has been on since May around the country, looking for the next Miss Tourism Uganda queen who will be crowned on September 5 at Kampala Serena Hotel, to replace the outgoing queen Lucky Bianka Atino and represent the country in Miss Tourism World in July next year.
And it has been fun-filled seeing contestants displaying their cultural takes from their respective regions. The contestants put on a show through fashion, dance forms, poetry and songs.
At the unveiling, night it was the same story.
This was because Miss Tourism Uganda is in its 13th edition is riding on the theme “I am My Culture” in accordance to United Nations World Tourism Organisation and Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities-Uganda.
Each contestant had to perform, sing or wear something linked to their heritage, and it was a spectacle.
The Baganda contestants danced their Bakisimba dances to various numbers of artistes like Mesach Ssemakula while the Emaali song by Racheal Magoola was a staple for contestants from Eastern and Teso regions.
The Karamojong girls in their swaying skirts danced some Adonga dance forms, while the Banyankole did their Ekitaguriro, among others.
This year’s edition also unleashed the male contestants known as Man Of Tourism. The organisers say introducing Mr. Tourism is a way of not leaving behind boy-child in promoting culture and tourism.
Loice Namara Kalamuka, Miss Tourism Uganda administrator, said, “We introduced Man of Tourism this year because as Miss Tourism Uganda we believe in inclusion and that is why we do not want boy child to be left behind in tourism and cultural promotion,”
They were 16 in number and they modeled their way on the runway in a kaleidoscope of cultural wears.
Guests who attended in good numbers came on to cheer their beloved contestants in loud ululations and cheers. Miss Tourism Uganda will be crowned on September 5 at Kampala Serena Hotel. It was a fun-filled chilly evening.
