Linda Yang, a Primary Five pupil at Global Junior School in Mukono, is the current winner of New Vision’s Newspaper in Education (NIE) art competition.

This young environmental champion attended the Toto Christmas Festival together with her mother, Scovia Atim. Yang attributes her victory in the NIE competition to the strength of her drawing, which encouraged children to plant trees.

“To help with climate change, trees support rainfall formation and produce oxygen, which helps to clear air pollution,” she explains.

Although she came to the festival to enjoy herself, Yang says she could not miss the chance to inspire other children to care for the environment.

She encourages her peers to plant trees and flowers at home, especially during the dry, sunny season.

“To help them grow, children can water them in the morning and in the evening,” she advises.

Yang adds that trees create cooler surroundings for everyone and reduce the heat in the environment. For those taking part in the art competition, Yang offers a simple, but valuable tip: choose a clear theme and ensure the message is easy for people to understand.

The Toto Christmas Festival has been sponsored by Ruparelia Group, Sumz, NIRA, Toyota, Pepsi and Indomie at an entry fee of sh10,000.
