KAMPALA - Grammy Award-winning music icon Lionel Richie is set to perform in Uganda at the Adventure of Humanity Concert in June 2025.
The legendary singer, known for timeless hits like Hello, Endless Love, and All Night Long, will grace the stage in Gulu alongside Sister Sledge, the renowned American vocal group famous for their classic anthem We Are Family.
During a press conference at the Uganda Media Centre (Tuesday, February 11), Uganda’s Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Norbert Mao, shared the exciting news and highlighted that this concert is more than just entertainment.
He said it is a movement aimed at global unity and climate change awareness.
"Lionel Richie is coming to Gulu in June. Sister Sledge will also be performing. This concert is about repairing the world, tackling climate change, and bringing people together through music," Mao revealed.
The Adventure of Humanity Concert follows in the footsteps of Michael Jackson.
The initiative was originally conceived over 25 years ago and endorsed by global icons such as Tara Gandhi and the Royal House of Mandela, according to Richard Nilsson, president of Adventure for Humanity, said.
"In 1999, Michael Jackson organized two monumental concerts in Germany and South Korea to support the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, UNESCO, and the Red Cross. Now, we are continuing that legacy with a concert that will amplify climate awareness on a grand scale," Nilsson said.
The concert is scheduled to take place at Kaunda Grounds in Gulu. The venue will be available from May 30 to June 9, marking a historic cultural and environmental milestone for the region.
This global event aims to raise awareness of climate change through music and art. It also aims to educate communities on sustainability and environmental responsibility.
Born Lionel Brockman Richie Jr., the legendary artist first rose to fame in the 1970s as the co-lead singer of the Commodores, writing and performing classic hits like Easy, Sail On, and Three Times a Lady.
His 1982 solo debut album, Lionel Richie, sold over four million copies and featured chart-topping singles such as You Are, My Love, and Truly.
A four-time Grammy winner, Richie has performed in African countries like Morocco, Egypt, South Africa and Libya. His upcoming appearance in Uganda marks yet another chapter in his illustrious career.
